Dallas Physician "Excited" About The Performance Of His Starfire Bonanza
![]()
"I'm very excited. It's performing super." That was the reaction Dr. Paul Mathia of Dallas had when he was asked how he liked the performance of his Colemill Starfire Bonanza modification.
"There's a dramatic difference in climb performance. The cruising speed is faster. It's also quieter. I'm very glad I had the conversion performed," Dr. Mathia said.
When asked what he would say if other Bonanza owners asked him about the Starfire conversion, he replied, "I would tell them to go for it. I was very happy with the service at Colemill.
Dr. Mathia's response is very similar to many others the people at Colemill have heard from Bonanza owners and pilots over the years. Many people feel it would be extremely difficult to improve an airplane as good as a Bonanza - one of the best singles ever built. But, Colemill has proved over and over again (sometimes to skeptical Bonanza owners) that the Starfire is a much improved airplane when compared to a stock Bonanza.
It takes off quicker. It climbs better. It cruises faster. It flies quieter and smoother. Those aren't just claims made by Colemill. Those are things Starfire Bonanza pilots have said on numerous occasions.
What makes the Starfire Bonanza such a great airplane? It all stars with the IO-550 engine Colemill installs as part of each Starfire modification. This is the Continental engine that always produces at least 300 h.p. - never less, usually more. It is also built extremely strong to resist cracking and has an altitude compensating fuel system.
Another component in the Starfire conversion is a four-blade "Q-Tip" propeller. This is what gives the Starfire its extremely quiet, smooth ride. The four-blade prop also has the additional advantage of providing more ground clearance.
Also included in each Starfire modification is an extremely accurate Shadin Digiflow fuel computer which reduces pilot workload by answering all fuel and time questions at the touch of a button.
It you fly a Bonanza and think it can't be improved, think again. Or, better yet, talk to another Bonanza owner or pilot who had had the Colemill Starfire modification perfpormed. You are virtually certain to hear the same kind of comments made by Dr. Mathia at the beginning of this article.
The Starfire modification is available for all Bonanzas built from 1964. And, like all Colemill modifications, has been fully tested and STCed.
