Colemill President II is a "Rocket Ship"
![]()
The Colemill President II Baron climbs great and cruises fast. The owner of this President II also elected to have Colemill's "Zip-Tip" winglets installed to improve lift and inflight stability. "It's a rocket ship. That's the best way to describe the thing. We knew the performance would go up but not so strongly." Those were the words Mike Brady of Atlanta used to describe his Colemill President II modification.
Brady is with the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation - a non-profit public educational veterans organization based at Tara Field just outside Atlanta. The organization owns 20 former U.S. Army aircraft which it takes around the country to perform at air shows to, as Brady puts it, "tell the story of Army aviation from World War II through Vietnam." Last year they performed for more than 400,000 persons at 11 air shows. This year they will perform for approximately 2.4 million persons at 17 airshows.
Needless to say, that kind of schedule requires a lot of planning and logistical work. The airplane they use to transport people around the country for those tasks is an Army T-42-A - the military version of the Beech 55 Baron. Brady said the airplane was nearing TBO and starting to use oil so the organization decided to put new engines on it.
Brady said, "We checked around and had a lot of people recommend the Colemill conversion to us. We flew up there and talked with them and were very impressed with them. So we turned the aircraft over to them. When we got the aircraft back it was like a new machine."
Brady said since the Colemill President II modification was performed on the airplane, pilots who fly it have noted a 21 to 22 KIAS increase in cruise speed and an impressive increase in climb performance.
"It just screams. I couldn't be any happier with the performance," Brady stated.
The Colemill President II conversion is available for all Baron 55 A and B models. The modification includes installation of the highly reliable Continental IO-550 300 hp engines, new three blade props and governors, and a Shadin Digiflow fuel computer.
The President II is one of three modifications Colemill offers for Barons. The other two are the President 600, also for 55 A and B models and the Foxstar for C, D, and E models of the 55 and all 58 models.
